Overview

Helen Keller International is a global health organization
dedicated to eliminating preventable vision loss, malnutrition, and
diseases of poverty. Helen Keller Intl currently conducts programs in 20
countries in Africa and Asia as well as in the United States. Helen
Keller Intl is known for sustainability, reliability, and technical
expertise in preventing and treating blindness and malnutrition.

Established
in 1984, the Helen Keller Intl – Tanzania office was the organization’s
first in Africa set up to provide primary eye care services in central
Tanzania. Helen Keller Intl has since expanded its role and currently
works in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Local Government
Authorities (LGAs), Local NGOs, and other national and international
development partners in the areas of nutrition, eye health and neglected
tropical diseases (NTDs), particularly trachoma elimination

Scope of the Internship:
Helen
Keller Intl – Tanzania is implementing Cataract Management to Reduce
Blindness in Tanzania (CAMBI) project in several districts of Mbeya,
Njombe, Songwe and Iringa regions. Through these programs we support
district-level teams to conduct cataract case finding, screening and
organizing outreach camps to provide treatment to cataract patients.
Helen Keller Intl is seeking Program Interns interested in supporting
program planning, implementation including conducting field outreach
activities in program districts and reporting of CAMBI project
interventions.

Position Title
: Program Intern- CAMBI Project.
Department: Eye Health Programs
Duty Station: Dar es Salaam
Reports to: Eye Health Program Officer
Duration: 6 months

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
•
Implement all project activities aimed at reduction of cataract case
backlog and other eye conditions in rural districts of Tanzania
including training and management of local Case Finders, managing
surgical outreach camps, follow ups, procuring equipment and
consumables, and working closely with zonal, regional and district
surgical teams.
• Conduct ongoing and accurate collection, cleaning
and analysis of patient data to ensure that patients receive appropriate
follow-up care as well as to share with donors, inform future efforts,
and increase quality of services provided to the community and Full
Geographical Coverage (FGC) is attained and well documented.
• Document cases studies, success stories and key lessons learnt.
•
Serve as liaison to ensure strong planning and communication between
regional/district surgical teams and authorities, Helen Keller Intl
staff, and other partners.
• Compose field activity plans, budgets
and reports, monthly and quarterly updates, meeting minutes, fund
reconciliations, PowerPoint presentations, Excel statistical and
narrative donor reports, and other required documentation as required by
Helen Keller Intl.
• Collaborate with regional teams to organize project meetings.
• Prepare PPT and present during meetings.
• Manage planning and implementation of cataract project in the project area.
•
Work with Helen Keller Intl and NECP teams to identify project
challenges to and develop and implement solutions to overcome those
challenges.
• Perform any other duties as directed by Program Manager.
• Willingness to travel to program areas at least ninety percent of the time (90%)

Desired Qualifications and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Social Science, knowledge of Eye health is plus
•
One (1) year of work experience in field-based health work in rural
Tanzania, OR a minimum of one (1) years’ experience in the same.
• Should be willing to live and work full-time in rural districts of Tanzania, with frequent visits to remote villages.
•
Experience working with Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Local
Government Authorities (LGAs) will be a significant added advantage.
• Technical skills in planning and implementation for Eye health, and NTDs are strongly preferred.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Must be competent in Microsoft packages (Excel, Word, Power Point presentation etc.) and in use of email.
• Must be a Tanzanian national, fluent in Kiswahili and a working knowledge of English.
• I should be a strategic thinker, who possesses strong critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills
