  • ARNTD/USAID African Researchers’ Small Grants Program 2019 (Up to $25,000)

    The African Research Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ARNTD) with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and UK aid from the UK government, through the Coalition for Operational Research on Neglected Tropical Diseases (COR-NTD), is seeking proposals for both operational and social science research on ‘’Emerging Challenges facing NTD program implementation in Africa.’’
    This third edition of the Small Grants Program (SGP III) is to support African researchers in both early and mid/late career to undertake operational research aligned with the goals established in the London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases. SGP III is comprised of two small grant funding tracks:
    Small grants for junior researchers
    Small grants for mid-career and/or senior researchers.

    Grants
    The small grants targeted at junior and senior researchers at the Masters or PhD level will provide grants ranging from USD $5,000 – $25,000.

    Eligibility
    General criteria:

    Applicants must be currently employed by or enrolled as a student in an academic, health, or research institution in Africa for the duration of the grant
    Must demonstrate having a commitment to NTD-related research as well as the skills and experience required to carry out the proposed work
    Must be able to provide evidence of research output, including publications and/or presentations at scientific conferences

    Specific to applicants for the junior researchers’ grants:

    Applicants must be an early career researcher, defined as a basic biomedical scientist, clinically qualified investigator, or public health researcher, who has not previously competed successfully as principal investigator for a major research grant (i.e., ≥USD 200,000)
    Must hold at least a Master’s degree or should be actively enrolled in doctoral studies. Applicants holding a doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DrPH, DSc) must have graduated no more than seven years ago. Clinicians (e.g. MBChB, MBBS, MD, DVM holders), who have not completed a Master’s degree must have some specialist training (e.g., Membership, Fellowship) or be able to demonstrate relevant research training/experience
    Must not currently hold positions above lecturer/assistant professor level or equivalent
    Must be able to provide written evidence of commitment to providing mentorship and supervision from a senior researcher with a track record and ongoing commitment to NTD research.

    Specific to applicants for the mid-career/senior researchers grants:

    Applicants must be a mid-career/senior researcher, defined as a basic biomedical scientist, clinically qualified investigator, or public health researcher, who has previously competed successfully as principal investigator for a major research grant, but is no more than fifteen years from their highest degree of study
    Must hold a doctoral degree (e.g. PhD, DrPH, DSc). Clinicians (e.g. MBChB, MBBS, MD, DVM holders), who have not completed a PhD must have completed specialist training (e.g., Fellowship) or be able to demonstrate relevant training tied to research (e.g., MSc, MPhil), or experience
    Must hold a position no lower than Senior lecturer/Senior Scientific Officer level or equivalent
    Must demonstrate that they have a track record and ongoing commitment to NTD research

    Position: Research Assistant

    sub-Saharan Africa, we improve livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition

    Duty Station: The position will be based at the IITA Regional Hub for Eastern Africa in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

    Criteria for Success / Qualifications

    Minimum of a BSc in Agriculture with a major in agronomy, or a related field

    At least 2 years’ experience in Cassava production

    Good writing skills and ability to communicate in English.

    Ability to communicate in one or more of local major languages.

    Capacity to work effectively in a team

    Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

    Highly
    effective in planning, organizational and multi-tasking skills with a
    positive attitude and strong administrative service orientation.

    Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, but also display team attitude in accomplishment of duties.

    Possession of excellent interpersonal and communication skills, good judgment and respect for confidentiality.

    Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

    Proficient
    in the use of computers, database management software,
    statistical/econometrics analysis software, internet-based tools and
    other electronic communication tools.

    Responsibilities
    The Research Assistant will perform the following duties, among others:

    Supervise
    the implementation of on-station, on-farm and demonstration cassava
    trials for weed management, following trial protocols and agreed work
    plans.

    Plan field days and training for cassava farmers, extension
    agents and relevant stakeholders linked to the cassava agronomy trials,
    particularly the weed management.

    Collaborate closely with Lead Systems Agronomist in determining and supervising of herbicide application protocols.

    Collaborate
    closely with Lead Systems Agronomist in the correct and timely
    collection of all relevant research and project data as stipulated in
    trial protocols, also including contacts of farmers and extension agents
    (including location, quantities, and pictures).

    Communicate progress and issues observed to the lead Systems Agronomist Tanzania.

    Collate
    (on a monthly basis) reports of field trials, training, and other
    farmer participatory activities carried out, in close collaboration with
    the Tanzania lead Systems Agronomist.

    Implement approved on-farm and demonstration of Cassava trials

    Work with the IITA team, plan field days and training for Cassava farmers

  • TEG Postgraduate Training Fellowship in Medical Statistics for African Scientists 2019

    Apply for the TEG Postgraduate Training Fellowship in Medical Statistics for African Scientists 2019. The Fellowship enables promising research students from Sub-Saharan Africa to undertake MSc training in Medical Statistics at LSHTM.
    The training is followed by a year working as a statistician at one partner centres in Africa. The fellow continues to receive mentoring, supervision and support for the duration of their fellowship from members of the LSHTM Group.

    The summer project, chosen by the fellow, often provides an introduction to the research topic to be pursued further during the placement year. During the placement year, the fellow is exposed to different aspects of research including study design, data management, analysis and reporting of findings. They are guided by local statisticians and researchers as well as relevant TEG members.

    Program Details

    Three fellowships are available, funded by the UK Medical Research Council (MRC), GSK and LSHTM, respectively, to provide support for two years training in medical statistics. For the first year the successful applicants will study for the MSc degree in Medical Statistics at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
    This will be followed by a one-year professional attachment at one of the African centres associated with the research programme of the MRC Tropical Epidemiology Group (TEG) at LSHTM. During the professional attachment, training Fellows will develop their statistical and research skills by working on studies with guidance from TEG scientists.
    Cost
    The fellowship will provide costs for fees, stipend (£16,400 per annum) and return air travel.
    Eligibility
    Applicants must be resident in and a national of a country in sub-Saharan Africa
    Be in possession of an excellent degree with a background in mathematics, statistics or a related subject
    Have at least 1 year of work experience in medical statistics or epidemiology
