Roles and responsibilities

Position: Finance, Administration & Logistics Specialist
Background
Natural Extracts Industries Ltd (NEI), a start-up social enterprise, is pioneering the sustainable flavor production industry in Uganda and Tanzania, starting with vanilla and other flavor extracts. The company works in all areas from cultivation, to post-harvest processing, to value-add manufacturing and international sales and marketing. The supply chain currently integrates over 5,000 farmers from Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Morogoro and Kagera regions, and through this sourcing model NEI aims to deliver a long-term socioeconomic impact of 50% incremental annual income per smallholder household. Current products include natural flavors, such as:
(i) liquid extracts from vanilla, orange, cacao and coffee; and
(ii) solid flavors like vanilla pods, cocoa powder and nibs. The company has established a subsidiary, NEI Uganda Ltd, located in Kampala.

Project Scope
The core components deliverables are:
  • Overall responsibility and accountability of conducting financial accounting and reporting for the company, per International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), which will be done by recording all the company transactions on an ERP system (KPI.com) and keeping orderly and organised physical (hardcopy) and electronic (scanned or softcopy) files of all relevant records;
  • Overall responsibility and accountability for financial controls and management, ensuring:
  • Make journal entries correctly, accurately, and on a timely basis, onto the company accounting ledger, following IAS/IFRS standards and Ugandan laws;
  • Controlling of inventory and stocks, including raw materials and general inventory orders, record keeping and warehousing; and conducting monthly inventory physical audits, explaining differences and accounting for these in the ERP system;
  • Reconciling bank statements every month and receiving written approval from Company signatories;
  • Maintaining the fixed asset register;
  • Managing relationships with banks and the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), including all tax and related statutory payments and reports;
  • Managing financial assets and Company investments;
  • Managing payroll and consultant payments, and other regular payments including URA (PAYE, WHT, VAT) and other regulatory bodies like NSSF, UNBS, NDA, OSHA, NEMA, District Councils, etc.;
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements/reports (including those for the Board of Directors in Tanzania);
  • Coordinating with the auditor to prepare annual statements and submitting the same to URA;
  • Reconciling invoices on a monthly basis, managing aged receivables, and other finance-related needs as may arise;
  • Ensuring value-for-money and cost-effectiveness, across all aspects of the company including production and procurement, and which may include internal audits;
  • Ensuring NEI Uganda Ltd is 100% compliant with financial, labour, export, tax and other regulatory requirements and general risk management (excluding topics on health, safety, environment and manufacturing):
  • Making all regulatory payments on time with accurate supporting evidence, and keeping orderly records of the same;
  • Under the instruction of the MD, manage all logistics of NEI Uganda as the need be. This includes but is not limited to competitive procurement process, travel & hotel arrangements, transportation of people and products, meetings and training arrangements and attending to visitors.
  • Staying abreast of updates on government policies and legislation, particularly monitoring publications on Uganda’s Official Gazette and publications from prominent auditors;
  • Assisting in the preparation of general paper work for submission to government entities, parastatal organisations, investors, donors and other parties, as may be needed by NEI;
  • Ensuring all assets are insured against appropriate risk;
  • Follow, without exception, all work instructions, health/safety rules and quality control measures as per the Company’s Quality Management System, including all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs);
  • Furthering the company mission: to become a leading African manufacturer of premium natural flavour products for the home baking and commercial kitchen markets, while providing sustainable, increased income for smallholder farmers;
  • Adhering to and instituting the company values of Professionalism, Ambition and Teamwork; Any other duties as may be required from time to time by the management team or the Directors.

Nature of Employment

Part Time employment under Fixed Term Contract

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Accounting (this is a requirement and no candidates will be considered without this), with:
  • Deep knowledge of International Financial Accounting Standards (IFRS) and accounting within a manufacturing context (e.g., allocations for bill of materials, cost of goods sold, input/output VAT, etc.)
  • Membership to the National Board of Accountants and Auditors (NBAA) with CPA/ACPA certification;

Position: WATER SUPPLY QA/QC ADVISOR, WARIDI Morogoro, Tanzania
Position Summary:
Tetra Tech ARD is the prime implementing partner for the USAID/Tanzania Water Resources Integration Development Initiative (WARIDI) with major subcontractor Winrock International. The Water Supply QA/QC Advisor will help monitor field-level activities that are focused on water supply construction. S/He will report to the Chief of Party and closely coordinate and support activities with the engineering team, providing analyses and reviews of construction activities at key points in the construction management schedule. S/he will play a critical role in tracking and advising Tetra Tech ARD and Winrock management on construction activities to ensure successful and timely implementation.
Main Responsibilities and Tasks:
The Advisor will report to the COP and liaise directly with the DCOP, Water Services Technical Lead and WASH Technical Advisor or their designees as directed. S/he will have the following principle responsibilities:
  • Provide targeted technical civil engineering support as needed to water supply projects, sharing openly with COP, DCOP, Water Services Technical Lead and WASH Technical Advisor insights and recommendations to ensure success,
  • Review and monitor construction activities related to in-process water supply projects in close coordination with Winrock International.
  • Support identification and monitoring construction management and quality issues and provide thoughtful, detailed and actionable recommendations for timely resolution to construction management challenges,
  • Cross-check field construction activities in relationship to surveys and construction designs as appropriate.
  • Monitor and support engineers on environmental issues to ensure WARIDI is in compliance with the WARIDI Environmental Monitoring and Mitigation Plan (EMMP) and is following best practices on environmental health and safety,

Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Relevant graduate degree in Civil engineering, construction management, hydrology or related field,

WORK EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 10 years’ experience working in the construction management sector as it relates to rural water supply in Tanzania. Experience managing donor-funded projects in Tanzania and/or East Africa. Experience in building and effectively supervising a diverse team of employees. Experience building capacity of local organizations. Exceptional and demonstrated management, organizational, conceptual, strategic and analytical skills in construction management.

SKILLS: Excellent knowledge of various water supply assessments, designs and systems in Tanzania. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of social awareness on sensitive issues in the field. Familiarity with Tanzania and USAID environmental laws and regulations. Ability to multi-task effectively and prioritize with competing deadlines and priorities. 2.MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Senior Legal Officer will be responsible for overall management of the Legal Services and provision of advice to the Agency on all legal matters.
3.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides timely legal advice and guidance to the Executive Director;
Provides statutory advice and guidance on EAC Laws and Rules of Procedure during Board and Technical Committee meetings;
Provides legal advice and guidance during negotiations and drafting of Contracts, MoU’s, Loan and Grant Agreements;
Liaises with Partner States’ Authorities and Institutions on legal matters concerning the Agency;
Liaises with the Counsel to the Community (CTC) on all EAC matters that have a bearing on the Agency;
Represents the Agency in courts for all legal matters;
Coordinates with Partner States Authorities in charge of civil aviation in formulation of policies, laws and regulations in the area of aviation safety and security;
Ensures compliance of the Technical Department in the formulation of Civil Aviation Safety and Security regulations for consideration by the Board;
Liaises with Partner States Civil Aviation Authorities to ensure compliance with the Chicago Convention;
Provides legal advice to the Agency in relation to matters concerning administration and employment, interpretation of labour laws and reconciliation matters.
Provides legal support with regard to the interpretation of the EAC Treaty, the CASSOA Protocol and CASSOA Act.
Performs any other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
4.QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

Masters’ Degree in Law from a recognised institution;
Must possess a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and registered as a Practicing Advocate in any EAC Partner State.

Trainings in air law and regulations is an added advantage

Five (5) years’ experience in the field of law as a legal practitioner;

He/she will be responsible for laying out and fabricating structural steel and sheet metal in order to build metal structures. Welds and cuts steel, interprets blueprints, and works with concrete reinforcing steel bars.

Responsibilities

  • Build and install iron or steel girders, columns, and other construction materials to form buildings, bridges, and other structures.
  • Cut, position, and bolt down steel bars to reinforce concrete.
  • Repair older infrastructure. Make, weld, and cut structural metal in fabricating shops.
  • Erect steel frames.
  • Direct operation of cranes to move structural steel, reinforcing bars, and other materials onto and around the construction site.

The Jana Robeyst Trust Fund (JRTF) is accepting applications for its Small Conservation Grants to provide financial resources to early career scientists/conservationists and non-profit organizations to carry out vital field conservation and research work in Africa.
The JRTF aims to provide relatively small levels of funding for ongoing projects or pilot programmes with a clear conservation value.

Funding InformationSmall grants will be awarded up to a maximum of 1,500 euro.

Eligibility Criteria

  • This funding program is open to individuals or organizations for projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Applicants can be based anywhere in the world.
  • Both successful and unsuccessful applicants are welcome to apply again 12 months after the submission.
  • Eligible project will have a clear conservation value and be based in a country in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Preference will go to projects in relation with elephants.
  • Education projects will also be considered.

What project is not eligible for funding?

  • Pure research will not be funded. Research project will be considered if they demonstrate applied benefit to conservation and/or target an identified conservation need.

Child Safeguarding:

ROLE PURPOSE:
The Emergency MEAL Officer takes the overall responsibility of operationalizing the MEAL system and SCI MEAL approach in emergency programmes. Dimensions: Due to political unrest in Burundi high numbers of refugees escaping into neighbouring countries of DRC, Uganda, Rwanda & Tanzania. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Applications for the Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2020 are now open. The Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for candidates from least developed countries and fragile states in the Commonwealth, for full-time doctoral study at a UK university.

Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Commonwealth PhD Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.
These scholarships are offered under six themes:

  • Science and technology for development
  • Strengthening health systems and capacity
  • Promoting global prosperity
  • Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  • Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  • Access, inclusion and opportunity

Scholarship Value

  • Each scholarship provides:
  • Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor the cost of journeys made before your award is confirmed)
  • Approved tuition fees
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,110 per month, or £1,362 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2019-2020 levels)
  • Warm clothing allowance, where applicable
  • Study grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas
  • Provision towards the cost of fieldwork undertaken overseas (usually the cost of one economy class return airfare to your fieldwork location), where approved

  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2020
  • By September 2020, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree (2:2) and a relevant postgraduate qualification (a Master’s degree)
  • NOT be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university before September/October 2020
  • NOT have commenced and be currently registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, in your home country or elsewhere
  • Have the support of a potential supervisor from at least one UK university listed in your application form
  • Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format

Applications are open for the Commonwealth Professional Fellowships 2020. The Commonwealth Professional Fellowships are for mid-career professionals from low and middle income Commonwealth countries to spend between six weeks and three months at a UK Host organisation working in their sector on a programme of professional development.
Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Commonwealth Professional Fellowships provide talented and motivated professionals with the opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills in their given sector.

Fellowship value

  • Arrival allowance of up to £953.45 at current rates, including an element for warm clothing and reimbursement of the standard visa application fee
  • Flat rate contribution of £800 to the costs of the Host organisation relating to the administration and support of the Fellow, setting up of appropriate meetings, any materials required, and incidental travel for the Fellow during the award (to be paid to the Host organisation on receipt of an invoice)
  • Fees of up to a maximum of £2,000 will be agreed for awards under two months and up to a maximum of £3000 for awards of three months (to be paid to the Host organisation on receipt of an invoice)

Overview:
The Director, Private Sector Advocacy will be responsible for directing and monitoring TradeMark East Africa’s (TMEA’s) workstreams related to the Private Sector Advocacy portfolio at the regional and national levels in the countries in which TMEA operates, in line with TMEA project documents and the TMEA Theory of Change (TOC). The primary objective will be to enhance private sector organisations’ (PSOs) capacity to proactively and positively influence decision-making, to accelerate dispute resolution, to sustain political buy-in, to increase commitment and to reduce overall programme risks in TMEA’s project clusters.

Aspen Institute’s Training Program for NGO Professionals (Human Rights, Health, Environment, Water, Education, Governance…)

The Aspen Institute in Washington DC is seeking nominations for its 2020 New Voices Fellowship which is a year-long program that provides intensive media and advocacy training for frontline development experts.
With support from a team of experienced mentors and trainers, New Voices fellows develop and amplify their ideas to bring about meaningful change. Candidates for the Fellowship are expected to have both a record of significant professional achievement and a desire to share their perspectives on global development with a broader international audience. The Fellowship is open by nomination only.

While the fellowship is non-resident and not full-time, it does require a significant and sustained time commitment as fellows write opinion articles, participate in interviews with local and international media, and speak at international conferences.

The Fellowship is recruiting a total of 25 Fellows for 2020. They are looking for 15 Fellows who are development experts in fields such as food security, global health, development economics, health and human rights, mental health, and climate change. They are also looking for 10 Fellows who are experts working on the frontlines of sexual and reproductive health and rights.

3. Once the New Voices team has reviewed applications, they will ask a small group of finalists to participate in an interview via Skype or phone. From this group, they will choose the final class of Fellows.

They will undertake a program of intensive media training and mentorship to reach a broader global audience through both traditional and new media, as well as speaking engagements.

This year’s fellows include:

  • A surgeon from Kenya who lost four siblings to HIV and later helped to pioneer male circumcision as a strategy to fight the AIDS epidemic
  • A South African woman engineer who now leads efforts to develop engineering and STEM talent in girls across several African countries
  • A Nigerian former oil company executive who left the corporate world to become a “Farmer in a Suit” and promote agriculture as a career choice for young people
  • An Indonesian entomologist who has developed new ways to fight insect pests without harming the environment

The SHRH Fellows include:

  • A former sex worker in Uganda who founded an organizationthat connects sex workers to services such as job training and reproductive healthcare
  • A Guatemalan doctor and former ballerina who fights for access to contraception and family planning education to help vulnerable girls lead healthier, happier lives
  • A demographer from Niger who uses statistics to show how the population in one of Africa’s poorest countries will quadruple by 2050 unless stronger family planning programs are implemented

During the program’s first six years, New Voices Fellows were featured over 5,500 times in media outlets and delivered numerous TED and TEDx talks. Under a training partnership with The Moth, a non-profit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling, New Voices Fellows have told their stories to live US audiences and through radio and podcast syndication.

Supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Open Societies Foundation, the New Voices Fellowship was established in 2013 to bring the essential perspectives of development experts from Africa and other parts of the developing world into the global development conversation.

The new, three-year project to spotlight experts involved with sexual and reproductive health and rights has been supported by an anonymous donor. Application to the Fellowship is by nomination only, and nominations will open in August 2019 for the next class.
