Mobile Video Journalism Fellowship Opportunities at Aga Khan University (AKU) 2020

The Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications (AKU-GSMC), in partnership with Facebook, is excited to introduce The Mobile Video Journalism Fellowship –an initiative that aims to bolster digital skills in journalism to increase the production of Kenyan stories captured through high-quality mobile video. Do you have an eye for a good story? Are you a tech-savvy smartphone user? Do you thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment? Are you interested in using mobile journalism to shape the future of media in East Africa?
This fellowship program is designed to train qualified storytellers on digital mobile journalism and attach them to local Kenyan newsrooms over a six month period.
Recommended:  
Selected fellows will be placed as staff (paid by stipend) with Kenyan media houses where they will use smartphones to tell their stories. They will be tasked with conducting hands-on investigative journalism and creating relevant digital content. Additionally, fellows will be required to participate in various boot camps and workshops on selected weekends. This experience is designed to improve your skills in storytelling with data, mobile editing, and mobile journalism.
While formal education is not a prerequisite for selection, the applicant must demonstrate knowledge or experience in journalism, media, communications, video production or related field(s). This fellowship is intended to equip storytellers with mobile journalism skills, and promote the use of digital mobile journalism to share their content. We are looking for applicants who have displayed some experience in video journalism whether formal, informal, freelance, or contract. Selected fellows must be available to work full-time in Nairobi, Kenya during the months of March 2020 through August 2020.

Benefits
This fellowship pays a monthly gross stipend (beginning in March 2020) of USD $600 provided by The Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications. Note that the fellowship will end in August, 2020 and stipends will not be paid after this date.

  • One video you have created within the past six months that will be assessed on aspects of storytelling ability, creativity, relevance, and quality. This video can include, but is not limited to social media content, professional content, news content, entertainment content, travel content, etc.

Job Title: POSTDOCTORAL POSITION FOR THE PartoMa PROJECT IN TANZANIA
The PartoMa study is an interdisciplinary research project that suggests a large scale-up implementation study building on an innovative pilot study from Zanzibar, where context-tailored clinical guidelines and reoccurring training of birth attendants (the PartoMa intervention) appeared associated with improved care and survival at birth. The proposed research will be situated in five Tanzanian urban, overburdened hospitals with more than 60,000 births annually. At these facilities, the overall aim is to investigate whether and how clinical guidelines and low-dose, high-frequency training may be context-modified to cost-effectively improve quality of intrapartum decision making and, ultimately, improve maternal and perinatal outcomes.
The roles and responsibilities of the Postdoctoral student embedded in this project:
  • Engage in document preparation for Ethical review in collaboration with the other members of the research team.
  • Plan, co-ordinate, supervise and carry out pre-intervention quality of care study in all five facilities in Dar es Salaam, prior to development of the modified PartoMa intervention.
  • Explore data monitoring, surveillance practices and infrastructures in order to understand opportunities and challenges in generating accurate monitoring of birth data.
  • Engage in modifying the Zanzibar PartoMa intervention to match the needs at the five facilities in Dar es Salaam by collaborating with co-creators that include skilled birth attendants, hospital management and women.
  • Plan, co-ordinate, supervise and carry out the PartoMa intervention in all five facilities in Dar es Salaam.
  • Analyse quantitative and qualitative data collected within the PartoMa study, in collaboration with the research team.
  • Write manuscripts and present research at national and international meetings.
  • Participate in research dissemination activities, including public outreach.
  • Participate in research capacity building and teaching activities in Aga Khan University.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in epidemiology or other health sciences-related field.
  • Experience with epidemiological and qualitative analysis, preferably related to maternal or perinatal health.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and conversant in Swahili.
  • Working experience in a low- and middle-income country setting.
  • Ability to work relatively independently and collaborate within an interdisciplinary and international as demonstrated in previous team projects team.

Job Title: CLINICAL EPIDEMIOLOGIST, MEDICAL COLLEGE
As a faculty member in the Department of Population Health the candidate will have research and educational responsibilities to support teaching and research at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels across the disciplines of health sciences. The candidate will support faculty and trainees across clinical disciplines and within the discipline of epidemiology and biostatistics. The candidate is expected to develop and sustain an original research portfolio in clinical or population health sciences.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support faculty and Master of Medicine residents in research methods, statistical analyses and interpretation.
  • Teach in the Medical College Masters Programmes on topics including research methodology, epidemiology and biostatistics up to advanced level
  • Supervise students at MSc and PhD level as primary and co-supervisor.
  • Research results communication through written and oral outputs including peer-reviewed publications.
  • Support and engage in research grant development including as principle investigator.
  • Explore and implement strategies to expand research portfolio of the health sciences.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • MSc and PhD in Epidemiology or equivalent;
  • At least 3 years of experience in clinical health research design and implementation;
  • At least 3 years’ experience in postgraduate teaching in epidemiology and basic statistics;
  • Demonstrated advanced experience in using STATA, SAS and/or R;
  • Demonstrated excellent analytical skills;
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising Master and/or PhD students as a Primary Supervisor;
  • Demonstrated excellent grant writing and scientific writing skills;
  • Strong publications track record in international peer-reviewed journals;
  • Attentive to detail and quality;
  • Ability to work independently and within stipulated deadlines and schedules;
  • Highly motivated and excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • A team player and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
